Peter Miller was born in Sweden and first shipped when he was 15 years old. He would spend 36 years in the merchant trade and mainly shipped out of the port of New York. Peter Miller entered Sailors' Snug Harbor when 51 years old.
Peter spent 18 years, eight months, and 17 days at the Harbor and died when he was 70 years old. He is buried in Plot 7, Row 1, number 15, grave. According to the cemetery
map, this gives Peter a grave number of 1846.

Peter Miller worked for C.H. Marshall's Black Ball Line (Register Page of P. Miller). The distinguishing mark of a black Ball Packet Ship was a large Black Ball, sewn or painted on her fore sales (Lubbock, 7). The Black Ball line was made up
of Ocean Packet Ships that operated out of the port of New York in the mid to late 19th century. Herman Melville stated that the crews aboard these Packet Ships had terrible hard work owing to the packets' ability to carry such a large press of
sail to make a rapid passage to maintain the ship's reputation (Brinnin, 10).
