Church, Music Hall and Fountain, Sailors' Snug Harbor, Staten Island - NYPL Digital Collection
In the early days of the Harbor, Church attendance was required by the inmates (Barry, 83). Sunday was when the seamen could neither leave the grounds nor receive visitors without permission. Seamen who chose not to attend the Episcopalian or Presbyterian services were permitted to leave Harbor Grounds to partake in the Lord’s supper in New Brighton, NY. (Barry, 83). By the time Randall’s Memorial Church was built, attendance was no longer required, and few sailors attended the services (Barry, 84).
