Matron Cottage - Northeast Historical Archaeology/Vol. 37, 2008

The Matrons' House was a two-story Brick Structure with a cellar and an attic. The House was the living quarters of the single females that tended to the laundry and the cooking for the inmates at Sailors' Snug Harbor (Baugher). The Matron was an educated woman that directed the woman and kept the records (Baugher). The women of the matron cottage also worked as seamstresses and mended the residence clothing. From 1867 to 1884, between 6 and 13 women lived in the matrons' cottage (Baugher).
