Julien Perrede was born in France and first shipped at 14 years old. He was a merchant seaman for 30 years. The last ship that Julian served on was the Live Yankee in 1855. The Live Yankee was an Extreme Clipper Ship built in 1853 by Horrace Meriam of Rockland, Maine.
In 1854, the Live Yankee and the Red Jacket, another extreme Clipper Ship that was also constructed in Maine, would try to beat the best time for a North Atlantic Crossing. At this time, the record was held by Sovereign of the Seas. The Red Jacket broke the record traveling from New York to Liverpool under Captain Asa Eldridge. The new record was 13 days, one hour, and 25 minutes. The Live Yankee came in a day later but was plagued with a rough crossing (Trove).

Jullien Perrede last served on the Live Yankee in 1855. He would leave his home in New York and enter Sailors' Snug Harbor on November 24, 1857, when he was 44 years old. Julian was a bachelor, and he had no immediate family (Julien Perrede Register Page). He would reside at the Harbor for 31 years, dying on March 11, 1889, at 75 years old. He is buried in Plot 5; see Cemetery Map.
