William Bell was born in Scottland and went to sea when he was 13 years old. He worked for 34 years on Merchant Ships, eight years on U.S. Man of War, and three years on Whaling Ship(s). The last ship that he served on was the Brig, Reindeer, in 1852. William entered Sailors' Snug Harbor on December 12, 1856. He would remain at the Harbor for 22 years and 12 days, dying on November 24, 1874. William Bell is buried in Sailors' Snug Harbor Cemetery in Plot 3, Row 4, and grave 23. This gives him a grave number of 1045, according to the cemetery map.

William Bell served on the Brig. Reindeer in 1852, his position on ship was the first mate. The Brig Reindeer was possibly Captain Elbridridge Gerry Winsor's ship out of Kingston, Massachusetts, built-in 1844. (Jones,36).
